Leonardo, an expert in mechanics, explored ways of mechanizing drums. This crank causes the hammers to strike the drum in an even rhythm.
 
This is Leonardo's idea for a new kind of kettle drum. The crank tightens the head of the drum, changing the pitch. (See also  Drums II and Drums III.)
